Come Along on a Happiness Journey
A week or so ago, I wrote about the book I have been reading titled “The Happiness Project.” It’s awesome and I thought it would be fun to document the journey along the way.
I’m not generally an unhappy person, although we all have our days when things just don’t go right. Still, if there is a way to really be happy, I think it’s worth a shot.
The first thing in the book is to write your personal commandments. It’s kind of like a values list. What is it that you want to be sure you do? For some, it will include family, marriage, work, health. I’ve been thinking on this one for awhile and working on creating my own list. Having your own personal commandments sets the stage for how you want to live your life and where you want your focus. What principles do you want to guide your thoughts and actions? Once we have a set of principles, we can work on making resolutions for each of those and work on them one at a time.
My list starts here, although it is a work in progress and I’m sure some things will change on it.
- Be true to Kathy and who I am
- Live life with integrity
- Nourish my marriage and relationship with my husband
- Appreciate family even with all of their quirks
- Make home a place that’s inviting to come to
- Do something to always develop personally
- Live life with gratitude every day
- Relax and lighten up
- Develop my business to be self-sustaining and able to support the needs of my family
- Act the way I want to feel
- Practice random acts of kindness
For me, that’s ten areas I want to focus on. What I do know about myself is that I am a work in progress, thank goodness we are never “done’ or it would seem daunting!
I believe that sharing things like this list publicly is a way to encourage accountability. I am now accountable to you, my readers, for DOING these things. I hope it is a journey you will join me on and that together we will accomplish much!
What about you? What are your personal commandments? I will look forward to hearing them in the comments section.

I guess the first thing on my list should be to find the time to participate in a project like this. I have good intentions but can’t seem to find the time.
Lisa, your post is just a reminder for me today that I also need to get moving on this! It seems life happens to us all too often and so perhaps that starts with a prioritized list of how we spend our time. I’m working on that this week and challenge you to do the same!
