Are you familiar with this song? It is one of my favorites and at the risk of sounding morbid, it is one I want sung at my funeral some day. It just speaks to me. Lest you wonder, I’m not planning my funeral today. I simply have this song on my mind because I think it’s so beautiful and because I love the message. If you’re not familiar with it, take a minute to watch this video of the Gaithers, one of my all time favorite Christian groups, singing it:
In the last year, much hasn’t been well with my soul. Loss often makes us question the things we are doing in life. When I lost my grandmother, it felt as if a big part of my world had ended. I stopped so many things. I stopped writing. I stopped reading for pleasure. The list could go on and on here, but I won’t bore you with the details.
This year, as I started this challenge to write every day, I found the words to make it happen. Writing lets me put the words of my heart to paper and it has become an important part of my day again. I am so blessed to have found it.
Life would be a bit easier if we kept these words in our mind. So much is impacted by what we put into our heads and then out into the world. I do believe what we put out there comes back to us. What if what we put out there was this message, that indeed it is well with our soul. Would life then be more peaceful? Would some of those battles we face along the way be more easily conquered?
I have a business; I am a consultant for a direct sales company. The last few months of 2013 were a struggle there. I found myself even unsure of whether to continue. It was that funk I found myself in. I just didn’t want to do anything at all. As I struggled with those questions, I was blessed that I have an awesome leader who believes that things are controlled by a power greater than ourselves. She listened, she heard me (there is a difference, you know), and she supported me. She also gently reminded me of those things that mattered. Recently she reminded me, through a presentation she did, that in business we have three kinds of business–our business, God’s business, and their business. What we should focus on is our business, not the other two. Those are not things we can control, but we can sure control what we do with our own business. This morning, I was again reminded of that as I listened to this song. I want to thank her for simply being who she is, because today, even with my business, it is well with my soul.
This week, my book will be heading out to those who have offered to review it for me. I’m excited about that. I also send it with a bit of trepidation because, well, I think that just happens to writers when they let others see their work. Still, that brings us one step closer to shipping it and making it available where it will bless others.
Today, on this day of rest for many, I am simply basking in the knowledge that whatever my lot, it is well with my soul. I hope you have a blessed Sunday.
