Who hasn’t asked this question before during those times in our lives when things are hard? When you lose a job, someone dies, someone is hurt in a violent act. It is during those times that we often wonder where God is and how He could allow something like that to happen. Certainly some of the people in Haiti are asking that question after the recent earthquakes and devastation there.
The author deal with how very normal, and even important, it is that we ask these kind of questions. It is refreshing to see someone from the Christian realm address this instead of some of the norms that say “where is your faith that you would question God?” I appreciated the down-to-earth manner in which he spoke to it. He also reminds us, through examples and scripture, that indeed God does not desert, He is always there. I loved the example in the book that referenced God’s answer being if He took away a painful experience, it would also be taking away someone else’s free will to do something. That is so true.
I happened to get this book at a time when I certainly had asked this question and found it reinforced what my subconscious knew. Still it was refreshing to see that someone addressed it in such a practical manner. I would recommend it to others who have asked this question as well as to those who work with people. It is a worthwhile read.
