“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” – Nelson Henderson
The book “Halftime” speaks to how we spend the second half of our life. In the first half of life, we strive for success, both personally and professionally. Then comes the second half. During that time, people are seeking significance, or ways they can make a difference. I love that book and love the challenge of attempting to do those things that truly make a difference.
How do you make a difference? Sometimes it’s simply by encouraging someone. Sometimes it’s by providing a listening ear. Perhaps it is by doing something for someone that they can’t or wouldn’t do for themselves. Occasionally it is the simple random acts of kindness that so many people practice. I used to love going through toll booths because it gave me an opportunity to do a random act of kindness. They don’t have toll booths in Barbados so other things have to be thought of.
Unfortunately sometimes we also make a negative difference in someone’s life. Speaking discouraging words, being harmful to another. With a brief encounter, we can plant a memory that far survives the good things we do for someone. It is important that leaders are always careful with their words and deeds so they don’t have this negative impact.
Who has made a difference in your life? I look forward to you sharing some examples.
