American flagToday some of my friends posted a challenge to write every day this month about something I am thankful for. I am taking on this challenge starting today with this post.

Today I am thankful for our military folks and all they do for our country and the world. In the United States, today is Veterans Day, a day when we honor those who have served our country. This past week, we watched with horror as we saw the terrorist attack at Fort Hood in Texas. For me, it was disturbing to see that happening on our own soil. We think of war and the need to protect ourselves as being something that happens far from home, yet here it is in our own backyard. My first thought was for some of the families I know who are stationed at Fort Hood. Thankfully I have heard from them and they are all okay. It was a bit scary.

I am also very thankful for the families of those in the military. I think of the families as the unsung heroes. While they may not be on the front lines fighting war, it is the families who keep things going here at home. It is an ongoing challenge for them as parents try to keep the family going, maintain some semblance of “normal” for their children, and children operate a big portion of their lives with one parent gone from home a lot.

In my contacts with the military and the support I have done through the last several years with the Any Soldier program, I have learned so much about the folks who serve our country. They are humble, they are committed, and they are proud of what they do in service. And today, I am thankful for them and all they do to make our world a little safer.

I ask you to join me in this challenge. Every single day this month, write down something you are thankful for. You will be surprised at how it changes your outlook. What is it that you are thankful for today?
