I’m going to start a new thing here, a word of the week! In my community, we’re doing this using the book, Focus. It takes one word each week that you spend time thinking about and implementing into your life that week. And what if one word a week could really change things in life for you? So come along with me and give it a try!
I really love how God puts things together. Just yesterday, I attended the Mary & Martha simulcast. Think of it as a conference, but totally online. We had worship, devotionals, inspiration, training, and of course, the new product reveal. The theme was believe. Just believe. And the idea that you “Believe you are His.”
One presentation really stuck with me. It was done by one of the staff with Mary & Martha, Marsha Sites McKeegan. She is such an incredible woman of God. She spoke about finding our why, or why we do what we do. Not just in business, but in life. It’s the focus on that why that makes it matter and keeps you motivated to continue, even if times are hard. My favorite quote from that just fits with this word of the week: “Abraham went – not knowing where. Noah built, not knowing why. Moses led, not knowing how.”
Proverbs 8:32 says “My children, listen to me, for all who follow my ways are joyful.”
Think of the disciples. Jesus said “Follow me.” And yet not one of them said “Well, okay, where are we going?” Or “how will we get there?” No, they simply followed, even though they had no idea where Jesus was going next. They didn’t ask for a map, they didn’t ask for directions, they had no idea where they were going. They simply trusted their leader. How can we be like that in our own lives?
Do you ever get caught up in the details? I know I do. I’m a planner so I like having the details. I want to see how things are connected. And yes, sometimes when I can’t, I get frustrated, or anxious, because then the outcome just isn’t predictable. Maybe, just maybe, seeing all those dots would scare us. We’d see things we didn’t believe we are capable of. It might just stop us dead in our tracks. And that’s when we have to stop, take a deep breath and remember: But God.
I love that the concept of “follow” means I’m not in control. I don’t have to be the leader, I only have to rely on God as my leader because He know where we’re going and how to get there. Trust, it’s about trusting the leader and simply following. It’s really not about my ability, because boy if that were true, I wouldn’t get very far in so many things that I am blessed to do.
Following is about taking that journey with God. And in that journey, talking with him, worshiping, even sharing all He’s done with others along the way. And in the end, it’s about trusting God. The more time we spend on that journey, the more we begin to understand that God’s got this. And he is oh so worth the risk we take to simply follow.
How can you remind yourself this week that you simply need to follow?
I’ll be focusing on this word this week, I hope you will too!
